Tuesday 4th-Friday 7th October sees the return of a series of events organised by the Craft Distilling Expo.
The week kicks off with a Whisky Distilling Workshop at East London Liquor Company. The main Expo, featuring over 30 vendors of distiller supplies – including still manufacturers, and bottle & closure suppliers – takes place at The Boiler House, Old Truman Brewery on 5th-6th October. The event finishes with a Gin Distilling Workshop at Bermondsey Distillery on Friday 7th October.
The Expo’s talk highlights include: Ian Buxton on “What Funders Really Want”, “Why Packaging Matters” with Ivan Bell and Greg Dillon, and hands-on whisky and rum blending classes. 2016’s Keynote Speaker will be Alex Wolpert of East London Liquor Company.
In the run up to this event, the Craft Distilling Expo has compiled their annual statistics on distilleries in the UK. The number of distilleries that have opened in 2016 and are now producing and selling product is 28, bringing the number of new distilleries in the UK since 2008 to 111.
For the first year, the Expo has also looked at the distribution of distilleries in the UK. It has found that, in 2016, over 70% of the UK’s major cities (those with a population of over 200,000) are within 12 miles of a distillery. Current construction plans should see that figure rise to 85% in the next few years. Cities still awaiting distilleries include: York, Swansea, Coventry, Southampton, and Portsmouth.
